Rick & Morty is the kind of show that has developed a pretty devoted following. As is usually the case, when a fanbase is as dedicated as the Rick & Morty fanbase is, that can end up being a touch problematic. One of the persistent elements in the fanbase is that you have to be pretty smart to be a Rick & Morty fan. The show is literally weighed down by a relentless amount of references to science fiction and science fact alike. Just one episode will contain dozens of such references as Rick rattles off all the reasons that he doesn’t care and that you shouldn’t either. But is the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim hit as smart as everyone’s saying? Do you have to be a super genius like Rick to really understand the nuances of characters like Mister Poopy Butthole or the deep witty comedy of Ball Fondlers on the Interdimensional Cable box? Is the science in Rick & Morty even all that accurate? Or is the show following the time honored tradition of the shows that come before it, from Futurama to Sherlock Holmes and all the way back to The Epic of Gilgamesh? How much of that just comes down to creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s understanding of things like the monomyth and how to create a genius character without actually being a genius?
