Standard Conception of Rationality & Its Problems (John Searle)

Standard Conception of Rationality & Its Problems (John Searle) Is weakness of the will impossible? Is it always irrational to vote? Are there some odds against which you would bet your life or your child's life for 25 cents? Is it impossible for actions to be explained by reasons that are non-deterministic? These are just some of the problems that seem to arise given the standard view of rationality, that which involves means-end reasoning or instrumental rationality. John Searle discusses such a view and these problems that arise (although his own account isn't given here, and his own account obviously isn't free of problems either). This comes from a course on the philosophy of society he gave a few years back at Berkeley.
