Here’s the deal. I study arts at the University Of Colorado. My family doesn’t have much money, I got a scholarship to play soccer here and It’s like a dream to me. It feels amazing to study what you love while doing what you love… It felt like a dream.
My first days in college were a bit rough, I had never separated like this from my family and I really missed them. Besides, when you are 19 making new friends turns harder. I guess. One of my classmates noticed that I looked lonely so she invited me to a bar after class.
We got along really well from the first moment. I thought I finally had a new friend, but I got something better… After a few months hanging out and then going out in real dates, we became girlfriends: And being honest with you guys. I do love her. She knows how to make me feel good even if I’m not in the right headspace most of the time. I’ll do anything for her.
Her name is Mai-Lin and she’s from China. Her family moved here in 2005 and, like me, she got a scholarship. The difference is that she got it for being really smart and getting great results on her SAT.
We started living together on campus a few weeks after we went official with our relationship. When you leave home you’re afraid of being alone and not knowing how to deal with loneliness. With Mai I don’t need to think about that. We are good for each other. She helps me with my studies and I encouraged her to practice a sport. Thanks to me, she now practice tennis three times per week every.
Mai knows that my family and I don't have much money, so she tends to pay when we go out for drinks or to the movies. It was a bit annoying first, but I know she didn’t do it with bad intentions. She was just taking care of me.
Mai told me that she entered a special research program that could make all of our worries disappear if everything goes as supposed. I thought that it was a new painkiller or any other medicine that big pharmaceuticals test with volunteers in the campus or that she was participating in one of the psychology school investigations. She was very secretive about it.
Two weeks ago Mai went to her tennis practice and told me that she was going work on research afterwards, she didn’t text me back in a while. I thought that she might be busy. I feel stupid for never asking her where those investigations were taking place… And the worst thing is: I haven’t see her or spoke to her after that day.
I tried everything I could do, I spoke to the police about what was happening and they told me to stay calmed and try to have my phone close by at every second just in case she reached me. They also said that I had to be in touch with her family, because if it was a kidnap, the kidnappers will not contact their victim’s girlfriend.
I also talked with one of the College newspaper reporters about what happened and he asked his boss for help. After a few hours all news channels, even CNN, were talking about Mai… A specialist told me that it was a matter of hours before we should start hearing about her.
I tried to keep my cool even though I was clearly losing my mind. I went to my room and found the door unlocked. The emotion built up and I started crying while opening the door, but Mai was not there…
I only found a note over my desk that said: “Everything is going to be ok, I love you, Mai.”
What?? She was here? Why can’t she talk to me? What is happening??
Next morning I opened the closet to get a sweater and found a suitcase I had never seen before. I opened it and found money inside, a lot of money! It looked like something straight out of a movie. All the money divided in 10 grand packages… I counted it all… It was over a million dollars. WHAT? Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?
This is not helping me to understand what is going on? Where did Mai get that money? What if she do something bad for it? What if someone comes here to take it and founds me here? Am I in danger? Should I go to the police and report this? But what if they take the money and Mai needs it? Shit! So many questions.
I buried the suitcase near the campus in a place that only I know of… It will stay there until Mai appears and explains everything to me. I asked for a room change after what happened. I don't feel safe here.
What would you do in that situation? I appreciate any advice you can give me.
