In US news and current events today, deadly storms have killed at least 11 people in the U.S. in the first few weeks of 2020.

A series of storms threatened more than 30M people across the southern U.S. and midwest from Jan 10-11. At least 7 tornadoes touched down in 4 states after thunderstorms broke out in Oklahoma Friday morning.

One tornado killed 3 people in Alabama. Violent thunderstorms brought winds as high as 80 mph in Texas and Mississippi. Flooding in Oklahoma killed at least one man.

Heavy rain turned to snow in parts of North Texas. Ice and rain also threatened parts of the Midwest. Iowa was hit by its first major
winter storm of 2020 which brought 4 inches of snow to Des Moines. At least 1 person was killed due to icy road conditions

More than 1,100 flights were canceled out of Chicago on Jan 11 due to extreme weather conditions.

The climate crisis has contributed to an uptick of winter storms. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, which leads to more rainfall and precipitation. The U.S. saw twice as many extreme snowstorms in the second half of the 20th century than it did in the first.
