10. Bikini Atoll
Most beaches you visit the worst thing you’ll have to worry about is a sunburn, well, when it comes to Bikini Atoll you’re more likely to walk out with radiation burns. The beaches of Bikini Atoll are some of the most radioactive in the world because this was the place that the United States of America used to test their nuclear bombs during the Cold War.
Between 1946 and 1958 the United States conducted a total of 67 nuclear explosive tests on the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, and apparently all of them are now considered to be habitable… except for Bikini Atoll itself. That’s because Bikini Atoll was the site of twenty-three nuclear tests, including an incredibly powerful Hydrogen bomb.
Researchers from 2017 claimed that the radiation on Bikini Atoll was way over the minimum safety standards set by the US and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and as such may not be safe for habitation. You wouldn’t instantly die if you stepped on the beach or anything like that, but going on holiday on Bikini Atoll’s beaches may be opening yourself to a pretty big radioactive risk.
9.Sheerness, The UK
You wouldn’t expect a beach from my home country, the UK, to make an appearance on this list. For that beach to be at the mouth of the River Thames is even stranger, but then, the beach at Sheerness is a pretty strange place. At first glance you might think that there’s nothing up with Sheerness, the beachfront paints the picture of a classic sleepy coastal British town. But lurking beneath the waves is a ticking time bomb, which has been sitting there since the tail end of WW2.
It was in August of 1944 that the American Cargo Vessel the SS Richard Montgomery ran aground about a mile off Sheerness’ coastline on the Nore sandbank. At the time it was carrying approximately 1,500 tons of high explosives.
Some of these explosives have since been removed from the wreck, but the majority of the ordnance is still on board. It is apparently too dangerous to attempt to move them. But it’s also dangerous to leave them there, because over time the explosives are only becoming more and more volatile. Would you want to be around when the Montgomery’s cargo blows its top?
8.Praia Da Boa Viagem, Brazil
If we’re doing a video on dangerous beaches then we kind of have to mention the elephant in the room… or well… the shark in the water? Now I know, for the most part, sharks aren’t actually super dangerous creatures. They don’t want to attack humans, they want nice tasty seals, and only go for someone if they end up LOOKING like a seal, but Praia da Boa Viagem is a place with a difference. The Sharks are angry.
This beach is the beach with one of the highest numbers of fatal shark attacks anywhere on the planet, 60 attacks since 1992. The odd thing is, before the 1990s there were basically no attacks in the waters of the area, and then all of a sudden the attack numbers started to dramatically rise. Scientists believe the rise in sharks chowing down on swimmers and surfers is because of the nearby Port Saupe being developed, which meant the diversion of several rivers. This prevented Bull Sharks from accessing the rivers, and instead diverted the angry sharks to Praia Da Boa Viagem instead!
7. Skeleton Coast, Namibia
In some circles, Namibia’s Skeleton Coast has been dubbed the end of the Earth. It’s a virtually uninhabited stretch of coastline, an area that is truly wild. The name is taken from two aspects of this areas coastline, the hundreds of shipwrecks that line the beach, and the animal bones that are scattered across the sands.
There are two things that make this beach so dangerous, and the first is the animals that prowl the shoreline. There are big cats, ranging from Leopards and Cheetas to even Lions. There are also 11 separate species of shark in the offshore waters.
6.Chowpatty Beach
In September Chowpatty beach is one of the most popular beaches in all of India, that’s when Mumbai’s residents gather there to celebrate the Hindu festival of Ganesha Chaturthi. But those that go to the beach are kind of taking their lives into their own hands, it would be very easy to get sick at Chowpatty beach because it’s the most polluted beach on the planet.
