I categorize my koi fish quality in just two category, pond quality for the not so beautiful ones and the beautiful ones as the premium quality ones

How do you pick a good Koi Showa?
Start selecting a young showa, as with other young koi, by looking at the head. The head should have all three colors: red, black, and white, preferably in equal amounts. Best would be to have a good kohaku head with a lightening stripe or a Y -shape in black on the top of the head

Be careful choosing a young sanke with many black stripes in the pectoral fins. These sometimes develop too much black at a later stage. Again, as in all koi, look for broad shoulders and large pectoral fins for good growth potential. Thick tail tube is also a good sign.
