The most famous in the city are several churches such as St. Thomas Church (Godoulia), Red Church (Nadesar), Teliabagh Church, St. Paul's Church (Sigra), Ramkatora Church, Bethelful Gospel Church (Mahmurganj) and St. Mary's Mahagirja (Cantonment). But St. Mary's Mahajiraja, located in the cantonment area, is a major center of Christian faith. Also, it is very popular among the youth.
The St. Mary's Grand Hall situated in the cantonment area of Benares is almost two hundred years old. This is the first church in the entire Purvanchal with the verses of Geeta written on its walls. The main feature of this church is that the messages of Jesus Christ are written on its outer walls, and the verses of the Gita on the inner wall indicate the all-religion similarity. The fair is held here for three days on Christmas. People of all religions gather on the pretext of the grand fair, which displays the Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb of Kashi.
The hour of Kashi's first church built in the cantonment area was stolen a decade ago, whose voice was heard up to seven kilometers away to Bhelupur. St. Mary's Church in Cantonment is also popularly known as English Church. British army soldiers used to pray in it. Due to this it was also called Garrison Church (Military Church). Inside it is made of fine marble work and painting is made with stain glass (colored glass pieces). It also houses the memorial columns of several soldiers, including a Brigadier of Bengal Regiment in its premises.

Father Vijay Shanthiraj, Head of St. Mary's Cathedral Church, has greeted the people on Christmas and New Year. He appealed to the public to boycott firecrackers and DJs altogether. He has appealed to the people to understand the inner meaning of religion and celebrate the festival accordingly so that no one is pained.

उत्साह और उल्लास के साथ लोगों ने इस पर्व में अपनी शिरकत की। आधी रात प्रभु यीशु के जन्म के साथ खुशियों का दौर जो शुरू हुआ तो दिन बढ़ने के साथ वो खुशी दूनी होती गई। बनारस में लोगों ने इस दिन को यादगार बनाने के लिए जमकर मस्ती की। गिरजाघरों में सुबह प्रभु यीशु और मदर मैरी की भी आराधना हुई। अकीदत और आस्था के साथ दिन की शुरुआत मसीही समुदाय ने गिरजाघरों में आराधना और प्रार्थना से की। यहां मोमबत्ती जलाकर प्रभु यीशु को नमन किया। उनके संदेशों को आत्मसात किया। गिरजाघरों में पुराहितों और पादरियों ने विशेष प्रार्थनाएं कराई तो बाइबिल के संदेश भी पढ़े। क्रिसमस पर खास नजारा सेंट मेरीज कैथड्रल चर्च का रहा। यहां दोपहर एक बजे तीन दिवसीय क्रिसमस मेला का शुभारंभ हुआ। इस मेले में धर्म, मजहब का बंधन तोड़ क्रिसमस की खुशियों में शामिल होने के लिए सभी धर्मों के लोग पहुंचे। प्रभु यीशु की आराधना के साथ यहां उनके जन्म की लगाई गई झांकी ने सभी का ध्यान खींचा। चरनी में स्थापित प्रभु यीशु को देखने को भीड़ लगी रही। यहां लोगों ने खूब सेल्फी भी खिंचवाई। इस मेले का मुख्य आकर्षण बाइबिल प्रदर्शनी देखने को भी लोगों की लाइन लगी रही। कठपुतली नृत्य ने भी लोगों का खूब मनोरंजन किया। इन सबसे अलग यहां क्रिसमस ड्रामा का भी मंचन हुआ जिसे देखने को लोग खासा उत्सुक रहे। लोगों ने झूलों का भी खूब आनंद लिया। बच्चों बड़ों के लिए यहां किस्म किस्म के झूले लगे थे। खानपान से लेकर खिलौने, होम फर्निशिंग, सजावट, मनोरंजक खेल वगैरह के स्टॉल पर लोगों की जबरदस्त भीड़ लगी थी। अलग अलग स्टाल पर लोगों ने खरीदारी भी खूब की।
