Using earthen pots in an aquarium is easy & provides lots of cover for fish. In this video I've shared step by step set-up of approximately 50 gallon aquarium. The aquarium decoration is simple with 3 earthen pots & 2 pieces of driftwood, what I had in mind while setting up this aquarium was Garra Rufa fish with Fire-Mouth Cichlids. The driftwood will grow algae & also help maintain lower pH level in the aquarium & Garra rufa or doctor fish seem to like driftwood & eat the algae grown on it. The pots which are chemical free helps fish by providing cover & also adds to the aesthetic value of the aquarium. I used plain white river sand for tank bottom, as this works great with cichlids who uproot plants as the fire mouth cichlids you see in the video. Few things to keep in mind when purchasing Clay pots or Terracotta pots for aquarium is that these earthen pots must be chemical free. Some use red oxide to give these pots the reddish coloration which could be harmful for aquarium fish. Ensure that the clay pots & driftwood is washed using chlorine free water & the driftwood needs to be soaked for 2 to 3 weeks before it can be used in an aquarium.
Aquarium Earthen pots are inexpensive & lighter in weight compared to rocks. Hence using clay pots in a big aquarium makes complete sense. This also makes cleaning of aquarium easy. The fish seem to call it home & enjoy them in their tank. I have used smaller earthen pots for smaller fish in other videos, namely for betta fish tanks, for tetra & barb fish tanks, also for cichlid tanks. These earthen pots were also used for aquariums where cichlids were breeding as it provides fish with cover to lay eggs & for fry to hide from other fish, the ones you see in this video are larger earthen pots which can be homed by little bigger fish, in this case it is juvenile fire mouth cichlids.
These earthen pots are baked in higher temperature unlike few terracotta pots which are sun baked. The used are earthen pots which are oven baked this increases their life as they do not disintegrate under water.
