DANCING On Ice fans were left confused this evening when Michael Barrymore appeared in the Christmas special - despite quitting the show with a broken wrist. The 67-year-old star was introduced as one of the new contestants for the 2020 series of the programme. Michael was shown talking about how much his TV comeback means to him in the video trailer before making his debut on the rink with his professional partner. He also took part in the group dance. The '90s TV presenter enjoyed some back-and-forth with the judges - with hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield even showing a throwback clip of Ashley Banjo on his hit programme Barrymore as a child. But fans at home were baffled by the entire encounter, recalling that Michael was no longer involved with Dancing On Ice. One viewer tweeted: "Confused about Michael Barrymore, I thought he'd broken his wrist?" Another lost fan asked: "So who started the rumour that Barrymore broke his hand and wasn’t on this year?" A third asked: "I know this is pre-recorded but surely Barrymore should have just been edited out as he's since pulled out of the show with a broken wrist?" The programme addressed Michael's situation as the credits rolled in tonight's show, with Michael appearing on camera with his arm in a cast. He told viewers: "You might have heard that since filming the Christmas show I have broken my wrist." He went on to confirm that he was "absolutely devastated" to pull out of the competition, but he will be at the studio for launch night on January 5th to support the other stars. Earlier this week, The Sun revealed that Michael had been forced to pull out of the show due to his injury and will be replaced by Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya. A source told us: "It's a real shame for Michael as he was hoping this would be his big comeback, but after his injury there is no way he could continue. "Radzi is now going to have to get up to speed really quickly to get ready for the series which is now only weeks away." The Sun revealed in September that Barrymore was taking part in the series — which would have been his first major TV appearance since he starred in Celebrity Big Brother in 2006, finishing second. Michael was hoping to resurrect his career, which was devastated when party guest Stuart Lubbock died in his swimming pool in 2001. He apologised on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in June for Stuart’s death, over which he was never charged.
