In the first few seasons of Stranger Things, the Upside Down is the alternative dimension existing in Hawkins, Indiana. However, some viewers have been confused about how the entrance to the dimension works - and whether there are multiple gates into it. How it works is never fully explained in the show but here’s everything that has been revealed about the workings of it so far.Are there multiple gates to the Upside Down? Throughout the past three seasons of Stranger Things, the Upside Down has been a major part of the series. Acting as the gate to an alternate dimension, it is the home to the terrifying Demogorgon. Season one of the show revealed the main gate was in the Hawkins National Laboratory after it was opened during a number of experiments. However, throughout the season, the way into the dimension was also opened up though a number of portals. Stranger Things: Do writer hints reveal major character deaths? This includes Steve Harrington’s (played by Joe Keery) swimming pool where Barbara Holland (Shannon Purser) is sucked into the Upside Down in episode one as well as the Byers’ house. This was also the case at the beginning of season two when Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was able to leave the Upside Down via an entrance in the school. This has led some fans to wonder how exactly the Upside Down works and whether it can be entered through various doors. One user on Reddit revealed although the writers never explain exactly how it works, some things can be inferred about the gate. In season one, it seems to be Eleven’s reaction during one of the experiments causes the Demogorgon to be able to travel between dimensions. Stranger Things season 4 Netflix release date, cast, trailer, plot They wrote: “Eleven sees and touches the Demogorgon while she’s in the void, she gets scared and her reaction opens the gate. “While this gate is open, the Demogorgon can come and go between our dimension and the Upside Down as he pleases.” This is when he takes Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and Barb to the Upside Down and was able to open portals in a number of locations. The user added: “The adult Demogorgon seems to have the ability to go through ‘portals’ while a gate is active - if this is his own doing or the Mind Flayer’s, we don’t know that.” Stranger Things season 4: What films will influence the new series? However, in season two, it is the Mind Flayer that is able to escape from the Upside Down and begin to spread the dimension across Hawkins. This evolved in season three when while Demogorgons could not escape, a tear seemed to be enough for the Mind Flayer to escape through and influence the residents of Hawkins. The user added: “When in July of 1985, a mild tear formed and the mind flayer got an opening again but couldn’t send Demogorgons, he did find a way to spread the bit of him still in our dimension through people. “And then create that fleshy creature made of melted humans to terrorise and try to kill Eleven.” Stranger Things season
