Hawaii for Hawaii 2019 – IHS Employment Gives Former Homeless Addict Second Chance

Hawaii for Hawaii 2019 – IHS Employment Gives Former Homeless Addict Second Chance When you’re addicted like Vaughn was, sustaining employment is an impossibility. When you’ve been incarcerated, it’s even harder for a person to become employed because you usually have to “check the box” when asked if you’ve been in prison before. We are so proud to see our clients who've struggled with addiction and incarceration find hope, and the opportunity to become employed once again

IHS staff have developed relationships with businesses across Hawaii who are willing to give someone a second chance after serving time. We also support employers with these employees by providing the support to help folks like Vaughn become a better employee so that they can continue their transition into a new life.

And like Vaughn, many of our clients experiencing homelessness have become victims of this opioid epidemic. It is cheaper and easier to access heroin than it is to work with a pain management specialist. So our job isn’t only to help Vaughn deal with his housing and employment, but also his healthcare. And having in house support to access the right resources allows us the opportunity to help more and more people like him move on with their lives.
