Do we really need ns2 for research?

Do we really need ns2 for our projects and research.....

#ns2 is good for understanding basic protocols, packet structure, various layered protocols, agents, applications, queues, etc. But doing some research using a outdated software of almost 8 years... is something pathetic.
But still some researchers try to do research... in those cases, more amount of work have to be invested in changing the complete codechain for the existing networking components which is a challenging one...
For those works, we can better try the alternatives like #ns3, #Qualnet #Netsim, etc..
