A truck driving job is a tough one. It's not for the faint of heart. There are an endless number of difficult situations and challenges which arise in the line of duty as a professional truck driver.
These are 10 of the most difficult (common) challenges professional truck drivers encounter in their truck driving careers.
1. Getting lost or taking a wrong turn. Getting 'unlost' or getting turned around when driving a big rig pulling a 53' trailer is no easy maneuver.
2. Dispatchers. Can be a huge challenge in some trucking companies. A dispatcher can potentially ruin the career of a trucker.
3. Being away from home. This presents numerous challenges for the professional truck driver and their family.
4. Insufficient pay. When the risks, hardships and duties of a truck driving job are considered, the pay doesn't really cut it.
5. Dangerous delivery situations. There are times in a driving career where a driver may find himself traveling through or delivering to an unsafe area, eg. ghettos, high crime area etc.
6. Complex pay statements. Sometimes trucking companies present pay statements that are much more complex than necessary. We wonder if this is deliberate to intimidate the driver, so he/she won't ask for clarification and just accept the pay as is.
7. Safety conflicts. It's difficult when faced with a judgment call when your trucking company disagrees with your judgment call. It can sometimes be a situation which threatens your job.
8. Difficult Backing Up Situations. Some loading docks or deliveries present challenges for backing up, which is one of the most difficult challenges a truck driver will perform in the course of his job.
9. Working in Extreme Weather Conditions.
10. Making Difficult Decisions. This can be a tough one. Making a decision that everyone you are dealing with disagrees, yet if things go wrong doing it 'their' way, you will be liable for any damage or wrong doing.
It's important as a professional driver to think things through and always do the safe thing even though everyone else disagrees.
A truck driving career is a tough one, no doubt.
