Broad Street (AL 173) Railroad Crossing, Headland, AL

Broad Street (AL 173) Railroad Crossing, Headland, AL *originally recorded on 7-25-19*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x20 inch lights, 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights, and a US&S Lunar Indication.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights and a US&S Lunar Indication.

This was the third crossing I caught the BAYL at. It features another pair of old ACL signals, which are rather rusty and feature some flashing lunar indications from US&S on the tops of the masts. It appears that the original 8 inch lights (most likely either US&S or cast-iron WRRS) were replaced in the 90s by the BAYL, with some reused MI 12 inch lights. Not sure why they chose to keep the main lights on the far signal 12x20 inch, while the rest of the crossing is 12x24 inch, though, if I had to guess, it was due to how closely the lights are spaced on that signal. They have all rather nicely faded though, which is nice to see.
The crossing is also the only one along this line to feature indicator lights like this, and, based on the brand and the age, they were installed by the ACL and are likely completely original to the crossing. Not sure why this crossing features them, as none of the other remaining crossings along the line, including the ones installed by the ACL, feature them. However, if I had to guess, it's due to the fact that there's a short passing siding (that appears to be typically used for car storage) which begins at this crossing. What it likely is, is that the siding track (the closer track), only features a drop-in-drop-out circuit, rather than any actual detection, assuming it even has any detection, so the ACL included the crossing indicators to let the train crews know if the signals were working or not. Either way, it's a neat feature to this crossing and I'm glad to have been able to record it.
