This film captures the reactions of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, First Vice President designate Riek Machar Teny, and Vice President designates Rebecca Nyadeng Garang and Taban Deng Gai, alongside the powerful words of Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. Background:
On 10-11 April 2019 members of the South Sudan Presidency designate and the Heads of Churches of the South Sudan Council of Churches joined Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the former Presbyterian Church of Scotland Moderator at the Vatican for an unprecedented spiritual retreat. This spiritual, ecumenical and diplomatic initiative was an opportunity for reflection and prayer, as well as for encounter and reconciliation, for those who have the mission and responsibility to work for a future of peace and prosperity for the South Sudanese people.
“And to those of you who have signed the peace agreement, I ask you as a brother to stay in peace, I am asking you with my heart, let us go forward. There will be many problems but they will not overcome us. Go ahead and resolve the problems. You have begun a process, may it end well. There will be struggles, disagreements amongst you, but let this be inside the office. But in front of the people, hold hands united. So as simple citizens you will become fathers of the nation.”
- Pope Francis, 12 April 2019
