US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would go to war with Iran over nuclear weapons, while downplaying the impact of recent attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman as "minor".
When asked in an interview with Time Magazine what moves would lead the US to consider a war with Iran, Trump said “I would certainly go over nuclear weapons."
Trump's remarks came a day after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBS Sunday that Washington is “considering a full range of options” in response to the recent attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, which the US attributes to Iran.
Pompeo added that a military option was "of course" on the table.
Trump, however, downplayed the oil tanker attacks, describing them as "very minor". Iran's rhetoric, Trump continued, has also changed since he withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal last year.
“If you look at the rhetoric now compared to the days when they were signing that agreement, where it was always ‘death to America, death to America, we will destroy America, we will kill America,’ I’m not hearing that too much anymore. And I don’t expect to,” he said.
Meanwhile, acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan announced that 1,000 additional US troops would be deployed in the Middle East for “defensive purposes.”
