From the sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square to the soldiers lifting the flag on Iwo Jima, photos of the Second World War remain as captivating as ever – even after 70 years. It’s almost impossible to imagine anything topping some of the most iconic images from the war. However, The Rescued Film Project recently unearthed a series of photos that give some of those famous shots a serious run for their money. These photos were taken by an unknown soldier during his time in WWII, but have never been seen by anyone… until now.
Levi Bettweiser, a collector of old film and the creator of the RFP, wasn’t sure if the images on these film rolls could be recovered. Thankfully, they succeeded.
